A Brief History

Mill Bank is believed to date back to around 1500 and belonged, with the mill, to the monks of the Abbey. During the 1700's, it was used as a workhouse. More recently, no. 9 was home to "Old Mrs Gore" and her 9 children. Mrs Gore raised her family without the "luxury" of running water. Water was supplied from a pump, operated by a lady living in the pumphouse, situated directly in front of the row of cottages. The outhouse across the alleyway was originally the communal toilet!
